Getting the most out of your candles

Every year thousands of people across the UK light candles in their quest to create the perfect Christmas ambiance. With this in mind we thought what better time to offer ten handy hits to help you get the most out of your candle. It may appear as easy of lighting the wick but add a bit of science and your candle will burn cleaner and brighter than ever before.

Hint No 1: Trim your wick.
We can't stress this enough, all candles smoke if the wick is too long. The scent throw comes from the melt pool, which is the amount of melted wax that forms around the flame. You do not require a blazing flame to produce a good sized melt pool. Different wicks produce hotter flames without making it necessary to have a larger flame. You can literally double the life of your candle, just by keeping the wick trimmed so before lighting, trim the wick to approximately 1/4".

Hint No 2: Votive Containers
Probably the most important tip for burning votive candles is to burn them in a tight-fitting container, one that is snug all around the sides. A quality-made votive will completely liquify in the votive holder, which will give you the maximum amount of scent throw. Scent throw is how we define the amount of fragrance released into the area... and whether or not you can smell it!

Hint No 3: Say NO to mushrooms
Highly scented candles can form a 'mushroom' on top of the wick which can lead to smoking. This does not mean your candle is poor quality, it's just another sign to trim your wick!

Hint No 4: Keep it clean
Each time before your relight your candle, check for candle debris around the surface. Where possible, keep a lid on your candle in between uses.

Hint No 5: No drafts
Keep burning candles away from drafts. Drafts cause candles to burn unevenly, thereby increasing the chance of smoking or dripping.

Hint No 6: That's hot!
Candles are best burned on a heat-resistant surface, even when they are already in a jar or tin, as the containers can become hot!

Hint No 7: Trim, trim and trim again
I know we spoke about wicks in hint no 1 but we can't stress enough the importance of trimming your wick. Every couple hours or so during the burning time, put out the flame, trim the wick again and relight (be sure to remove any wick trimmings from your melt pool of wax!).  This will not only help to keep your candle from smoking, but will also extend the life of your candle!

Hint No 8: Melt Pool
To assist your candle in a clean and even burn, allow it form a complete melt pool each time you light it, this is the amount of melted wax that forms around the flame. To create a full melt pool, burn the candle for a minimum of one hour for every inch of it's diameter. All future burns should follow the first ones path and melt fully to the sides. And depending on the diameter of the container, those future burns should be no longer than four hours. Just follow the rule for creating a melt pool to calculate the length of time a candle can burn safely.

Hint No 9: Every little bit counts!
Discontinue burning when only 1/2" of wax remains on the bottom of your candle.

Hint No 10: NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED!!
Yes, it's so important we written this title in block capitals. Keep an eye on your scented candles, this is how terrible accidents are avoided!

Don't forget to enjoy your candles, a little bit of science goes a long way!

Merry Christmas from the girls at Greenleaf UK!

Introducing Greenleaf Baby Sachets

We're really excited about the Greenleaf Baby Collection, a range of scented sachets: beautifully decorated paper envelopes containing a mineral infused with fragrance oil. These large sachets not only combine signature Greenleaf fragrance with special technology that eliminates and absorbs odours, but they also provide beautiful home fragrance without the dangers of having a flame if a candle is burning or oil that may be spilt if using a reed diffuser.

The Greenleaf Baby Collection is available in four beautiful fragrances: Bouncy Baby (white cotton), Cuddly Baby (fresh powder), Sleepy Baby (lavender) and Snuggly Baby (sweet powder). Greenleaf scented sachets offer fantastic value for money- a large sachet that will fragrance a room for up to 4 months costs just £3.50. The Greenleaf Baby Collection will be available here in the UK from mid August 2014, watch this space for more infomation, the Girls at Greenleaf UK

A man's guide to choosing Home Fragrance

In recent months we've seen an increase in men ordering home fragrance products from our website, www.GreenleafGifts.co.uk. Choosing your home fragrance is just as important as choosing your personal fragrance, if not more so. Certainly if you spend a lot of time entertaining at home, you'll want to set the right mood for your guests (or-ahem-love interest) as soon as they walk through the door. So, guys, here are our top home fragrances for the most important rooms in your home.

1.Greenleaf Velvet Woods

Greenleaf Velvet Woods has been described as the ultimate 'mandle'. With ingredients like sweet coconut and vanilla musk, you’ll find this a deep, rich fragrance that will add a level of sophistication –
and masculinity – to your living room or den. Available in large, slim and small scented sachets,
votive candles and home fragrance oil. Visit our on-line shop or find your nearest stockist here.

2. Greenleaf Tuscan Vineyard

Bring the sophisticated, full-bodied aroma of rich Tuscan grapes on the vine into your home with Greenleaf Tuscan Vineyard. What’s more, women love it! Sure, women love the smell of roses, too, but you most likely do not, so you get the best of both worlds with this fragrance. Available in large, slim and small scented sachets, votive candles and home fragrance oil. Visit our on-line shop or find your nearest stockist here.

3. Greenleaf River Mist

Greenleaf River Mist is an essential item to “transition a man cave into a true bachelor pad. Described as an earthy bed of moss, amber woods, and musk, this is an absolutely sultry and sensual fragrance. Available in large, slim and small scented sachets, votive candles and home fragrance oil. Visit our on-line shop
or find your nearest stockist here.

4. Greenleaf Citrus Samba

We know what you’re thinking: “Citrus?!” But this is such a natural, pure, clean fragrance that everybody loves, male or female. It will make your space sparkle (no joke) because the fragrance immediately lifts your mood when it hits you. Whether entertaining for several guests or coming home after a long day at the office, this one is an all-around crowd-pleaser. And citrus scents are great at masking nasty kitchen odors! Available in large, slim and small scented sachets, votive candles, reed diffusers, candle tins and home fragrance oil. Visit our on-line shop or find your nearest stockist here.

Last bit of advice, guys, do yourself a favor: Stay away from floral fragrances. Many of your guests will probably enjoy smelling Blushing Tulips or First Blush as they walk through your front door,
but chances are you won’t after a few days. But pick those fragrances up for the
special lady in your life – they’ll love you for it.

6 Helpful Hints when using Reed Diffusers

At Greenleaf HQ we use Reed Diffusers to create a pleasing aroma throughout our offices. Here are some handy hints to help you get more out of your diffusers at home.

1 Flip Sticks for More Scent

If you want to increase the scent, just flip the sticks. Please remember to always flip diffuser reed sticks over a paper towel and to wipe bottle so no oil drips onto your table/surface.

2 Less Sticks Mean Less Scent
In small spaces, like bathrooms, use less sticks. We find 4 (of 10) diffuser sticks work well when using lemon diffusers in our office bathrooms. If we use all the sticks, it can be overwhelming in small spaces.

3 Reed Diffusers Replace Candles
Our customers enjoy  using reed diffusers in restricted places where candles are not allowed. Reed diffusers are a great way to enhance the smell of a room without an open flame. In fact, diffuser essential oils are flammable so keep away from open flames.

4 Protect Your Tables & Surfaces
Just like a glass of ice water can leave a ring on a wood table, reed diffusers work best when placed on a drink coaster (ceramic, glass, etc.) or glass table. Please use care when placing on wooden surfaces because the essential oils can leave marks.

5 Parents Should Keep Diffusers Out Of Reach From Children
Diffusers are meant to stand up and to be left untouched. If kids are around diffusers, please keep the diffusers higher and out of reach. Spilled diffusers can damage table surfaces. Diffuser essential oils should not be ingested. Thank you for protecting your furniture and children from possibly harmful essential oils.

6 Please Remember
- Diffuser essential oils are flammable, do not light and keep away from open flame. - Do not ingest essential oils - Diffusers contain essential oils and will stain wood surfaces. Always wipe clean the bottom of your bottle before setting on any surface.

The Greenleaf Girl Collection

Well, the New Greenleaf Girl Collection has certainly got us thinking here at Greenleaf UK HQ. This story began with the creatives at Greenleaf US suggesting that as girls we like to express our personalities in different ways on different days. Ok, so far so true, next they suggested that we might enjoy a range of fragrances to represent this so they created four slim sachets, Breezy, Cozy, Dreamy and Sassy. We have loved choosing our favorites and working out which Greenleaf Girl best represents each of us with some surprising results! To find out more about the vibrant new Greenleaf collection you can watch an exclusive video here. You can also find out which Greenleaf Girl you are by competing this short quiz. As always we'd love to hear from you so please feel free to leave a comment and let us know which Greenleaf Girl you are!
